LONG ISLAND, N.Y. (PIX11) – Long Island residents are donating supplies to North Carolina and Georgia in the wake of Hurricane Helene, the deadliest hurricane to hit the mainland U.S. since Katrina.

On Sunday, County Executive Bruce Blakeman planned to send trucks full of supplies to North Carolina and Georgia, including nonperishable food, cleaning supplies, toiletries and insect repellant donated by Nassau County locals.

Donations will still be collected at Nassau University Medical Center through Oct. 8.

Other organizations, like Hope Floats Long Island , are also collecting donations for people affected by Hurricane Helene. Hope Floats organized an Amazon wish list for things like canned tuna, hand warmers, medicine and baby supplies.

The Lindenhurst Fire Department also collected donations to send to North Carolina, including water, toilet paper, and pet food and supplies.

Last week, New York City sent first a team of first responders to North Carolina for rescue efforts, and helped save trapped residents and their pets, according to NYC Emergency Management.

The death toll from Hurricane Helene inched up to 227 on Saturday as the grim task of recovering bodies continued more than a week after the monster storm ravaged the Southeast and killed people in six states.

Helene came ashore Sept. 26 as a Category 4 hurricane and carved a wide swath of destruction as it moved northward from Florida, hitting South and North Carolina and Georgia in its wake.
