BRONX (PIX11) – A former nursing assistant who stole from a paraplegic veteran has been sentenced to five years of probation, Bronx District Attorney Darcel D. Clark on Wednesday.

While employed at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in the Bronx, 34-year-old Unique Allen used a patient’s card information to make purchases.

“The defendant, who was an employee of the hospital, violated her duty to the patient, a paralyzed veteran,” DA Clark said.  “She will now suffer the consequences of her behavior with a permanent criminal record.”

According to the investigation, from December 2019 to January 2020, Allen worked in the spinal cord injury unit at the VA Medical Center. She used card information obtained from a 72-year-old paraplegic patient to buy $600 worth of food, shoes, bath items, and movie tickets, according to court documents.

Allen also attempted to purchase $2,000 later, but authorities said the purchase was rejected.

The suspect pleaded guilty in August 2024 to one count of fourth-degree grand larceny.

Allen was fired from her position as a nursing aid in an unrelated incident.
