Harlem mother charged in death of 4-year-old son: NYPD

HARLEM, Manhattan (PIX11) – The mother of the 4-year-old boy who died in Harlem on Sunday has been charged, according to the NYPD.

The mother, identified as Nytavia Ragsdale, 26, of Manhattan, was charged with criminally negligent homicide and endangering the welfare of a child, police announced Monday evening.

Police responded to a 911 call of an unconscious child in a home on Adam Clayton Powell Jr. Boulevard around 7:45 p.m., according to authorities. The child’s father called 911 and then left the home, sources told PIX11 News on Monday.

The boy was taken to Harlem Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, according to the NYPD. Neglect and malnutrition are believed to be factors in the boy’s death, sources said.

Neighbors told PIX11 News on Monday they never saw the boy with his mother. They said she has three other children.

All three children are with the grandmother and have made contact with the police.

The father’s whereabouts and involvement remain under investigation.

There is no history of the Administration for Children’s Services being called to the home, according to authorities.
