NEW YORK (PIX11) – NYCHA residents with rent debt may soon receive assistance through two new state-funded programs.

The housing authority has already started reaching out to about 61,500 households who may be eligible for financial assistance from state and local entities.

Those contacted will have to log in to NYCHA’s Self-Service Portal, click on the box labeled “Apply for Rental Arrears Assistance,” and fill out a consent form to allow NYCHA to secure money on their behalf.

Households will receive notice by mail about their approval status and the amount of assistance they may receive. Those approved will have the money credited directly to their accounts.

The financial assistance comes as part of two programs aimed at helping residents recover from the economic impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The COVID-19 Rental Assistance (CRA) Program and HOME American Rescue Plan (HOME-ARP) will make $185 million available in rental assistance funding.
