BROOKLYN, N.Y. (PIX11) — The NYPD’s Community Baby Shower in Crown Heights, Brooklyn, provided vital support to local families on Friday morning. The event, part of the NYPD’s Community Baby Shower Citywide 5 Borough Tour, aimed to assist mothers and expectant families with essential items and access to city services.

Held at the Major R. Owens Health & Wellness Community Center, the shower offered a range of necessities including diapers, strollers, and clothing. Additionally, families were connected with various services, such as CPR lessons provided by NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital.

One attendee, Racquel Moore, won a much-needed high chair for her 18-month-old son, Trevor, in a raffle. In an amusing coincidence, her winning number was 911. “My number was 911 and they could have got me on speed dial,” Moore said, laughing at the irony of winning with the emergency number at an NYPD-sponsored event.

Michelle Gall, another mother at the event, appreciated the CPR training offered. “I have a 4-year-old and a 6-year-old. Also have a program for young people. So I always want to make sure that if there are any scenarios, choking or issues why they’re not breathing, that I can help,” she explained.

Kannyia Pearson, expecting her third child, expressed gratitude for the event’s timing and resources. “We are expecting, so it’s the perfect timing to try to connect with other people and get resources,” Pearson said, highlighting the event’s role in supporting families during significant life transitions.

Detective Fred Washington reported that over 1,000 people registered for Friday’s event. “Out of the five boroughs, you got over 100 vendors citywide. And also, there are plenty of times you never know what could happen here. There have been times people go into labor,” he noted, emphasizing the event’s comprehensive nature.

For those who missed this event, the NYPD will host another Community Baby Shower on Saturday, Oct. 19, at the YMCA Cornerstone Gerard Carter Center at 230 Broad St. on Staten Island at noon. The event is free.
