TAMPA, Fla. ( WFLA ) – A 12-year-old girl was run over by her mother in an accident near a Sarasota middle school on Monday, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

The girl got out of the car, which was in the drop-off line in front of Booker Middle School, and dropped school supplies on the ground, according to the FHP.

Her mother did not see her crawl under the car to retrieve the items and pulled forward, running over the pre-teen, troopers said.

“I honestly was just wiping tears,” said Myra Moore, who was driving her kids to school when she saw the aftermath of the incident. “I said I cannot imagine what should be a happy day, a joyous day, just turned into tragedy so quickly.”

The girl was airlifted to All Children’s Hospital with critical injuries.

“This is an incident where it was not the speed of the vehicle that caused the injury. It was simply someone being in a rush and making an assumption,” FHP spokesperson Kenneth Watson said. “Hopefully this child will be able to survive this incident.”

FHP is investigating the crash. No additional information was immediately available.
