A Kansas City man is suing the Platte County Sheriff’s Department, alleging he was run over by a deputy’s patrol car while walking near his Platte City home in 2019.

Carl J. Yeager, 38, alleges he was struck by a car driven by a Platte County sheriff’s deputy in his southwest Platte City neighborhood on July 21, 2019, according to a lawsuit filed Friday in Platte County court.

Yeager lived in the 13000 block of Dowling Lane in Platte City at the time, according to the lawsuit. He said just before the crash he was walking south on Dowling Lane, a gravel road, in the aftermath of a domestic dispute at his house, according to the lawsuit.

As Yeager walked, the deputy turned from Humphreys Road onto Dowling Lane in his 2015 Ford Taurus and allegedly ran over Yeager, according to court documents.

The Platte County Sheriff’s Department declined to comment on the pending lawsuit. Yeager’s attorney, Jarrett Johnson, could not be reached for comment Monday night.

The lawsuit did not name the sheriff’s deputy allegedly involved in the accident or specify if he stopped his car.

The lawsuit does not detail the extent of Yeager’s injuries, though it indicate he plans to sue for medical bills and lost wages.

Yeager previously worked at St. Joe Radio and Air Conditioning, an auto repair shop in St. Joseph, according to social media. He has moved to Kansas City since his injury in 2019, according to court and property records.

The first hearing for Yeager’s suit is scheduled for 9 a.m. Nov. 1 in Platte County court.

In 2019, 1,204 pedestrians were injured in traffic accidents in Missouri, according to state records. Police-involved traffic crashes have been a particular concern; more than 320 people were injured in actions involving police cars in the Kansas City metro in the last five years, a Star investigation found.
