BETHALTO - The Bethalto Community Unit School District #8 Board of Education approved two new board members during their regular meeting on Thursday, July 18, 2024. Dana Aronin and Natalie McCoy were sworn in as the newest Board of Education members. Mud buildup in underground cave may have led to massive sinkhole in Alton park
A buildup of mud and sediment in an “ancient cave” that gave way may be the cause of a massive sinkhole in an Alton Park, Mayor David Goins said Tuesday. Goins said that’s based on preliminary findings by the U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration, but officials of the company that operates a limestone mine under the collapsed area said that they are unaware of that theory and that the investigation into the cause is continuing.

MONROE TWP. — Two separate assaults on women in Monroe Township are being investigated by the Monroe County Sheriff's Office. The first incident occurred during the early morning hours of July 15 in the area of Waterloo Park, a news release said. Creve Coeur to welcome Venable Park memorial artwork late next year
Creve Coeur plans to honor Dr. H. Phillip Venable with a 10x10-foot piece of artwork, set to be placed in Venable Memorial Park’s new central gathering plaza. Venable was a Black ophthalmologist who lost his land on the park’s site between 1956-1960 due to his skin color. According to the Creve Coeur website, city and court records show the “people leading the effort to obtain Dr. Venable’s land were motivated by bigotry and racial animus and sought to prevent the Venables from building their home in the city due to their race.”

Shots fired call ends with multiple arrests and weapons charges
On July 15, 2024, around 12:16 PM, Macomb Police responded to a report of shots fired near Albert St. and Piper St. in Macomb. Upon arrival, officers confirmed no injuries, identified that the suspects had fled, and initiated evidence collection. A search for the suspect vehicle was conducted throughout the neighborhood. Subsequently, MPD officers and detectives pursued leads, gathered evidence at the scene, and successfully located the vehicle. Information indicated the suspects were potentially armed and located in a residence on Derry Ln. in Macomb.
