PLEASANT MOUNT, WAYNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — A festival in the Poconos aims to promote education and the future of agriculture in the NEPA region this weekend.

Blue and ripened to perfection; thousands of wild berries at the Equestrian House in Pleasant Mount are ready to be picked and eaten.

Owner Roger Aguinaldo drove 28/22 News around the blueberry field, explaining when he repurchased the property in 2017, he had no clue it was even there.

“The beauty, the peace, the serenity. You really feel grounded into nature and Mother Nature and it was just a blessing, you know to find all of these blueberry bushes,” Aguinaldo said.

The former horse farm turned vacation rentals and events venue took the chance to share the sweet fruit with the community.

“You can pick until your heart’s content so unlimited wild blueberry picking,” said Aguinaldo.

The wild berries wouldn’t be complete without the bees that pollinate them. So the farm is celebrating its third annual Honey and Blueberry Festival.

The Equestrian House’s apiary holds 16 bee hives. Inside each of those hives, is home to around 50,000 to 100,000 honey bees.

The millions of bees are used to produce fresh honey sold by the farm.

In addition to honey tasting and picking your own berries, the event being held on Saturday and Sunday offers tours to learn more about local agriculture and honey bees.

“I’m from New York City, so we got to have things very quickly and I learned being on the farm, being in the country, that you know things take time. Sometimes the crop doesn’t come out,” Aguinaldo said.

The Honey and Blueberry Festival in Pleasant Mount takes place this Saturday and Sunday, as well as next weekend, from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
