Mike McNeill’s Diary for Monday, July 29, 2024: The new school year begins
We sent a message early Friday to John Ward, superintendent of the Magnolia School District, asking for an appraisal of two topics – the district-wide ban on smart phones, and the reaction to the early school start brought on by the new 12-month calendar. Ward said he knows of only two instances in which smart phones were confiscated on Thursday – the first day of school. “It has been unbelievable. Kids have been great, and not having phones has not been an issue. Kids are visiting with each other during lunch and are having conversation with each other. It is almost like they were wanting for someone to tell them to put the phones up,” he wired. Ward also said he never dreamed that the 12-month calendar would be received this well. “Overall this may be the best start I have ever had to a school year. I was very unsure about the new schedule, but I genuinely think kids and teachers were ready to come back,” he said.
