MEMPHIS, Tenn. - The start of a new school year is right around the corner for Mid-South students. In Tennessee, this will be the first year under a new law that allows teachers to carry guns in the classroom. The highly controversial law passed in April.
Applications Open for TDOC’s Fall 2024 Citizens’ Correctional Academy
The Tennessee Department of Correction (TDOC) will begin accepting applications for the fall 2024 Citizens’ Correctional Academy on Monday, July 29. The six-week program is designed to give Tennesseans an in-depth look at the state’s largest law enforcement agency. Classes will be held Thursday evenings from September 12, 2024, through October 17, 2024, at various TDOC locations around Nashville.

Tims Ford gets 217K grant
The Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation (TDEC) has announced a grant of $217,060 for Tims Ford State Park from the state’s Tire Environmental Act Program. Tims Ford State Park will provide matching funds of $54,265 and use the grant to install three separate porous pavement trails using recycled scrap tires. The project costs $271,325 and creates ADA compliant accessible pathways for guests of all abilities supporting Tennessee State Parks’ Access 2030 initiative to become the most accessible park system in the nation.

UC Airport Assessing Wildlife Around Facility
The Upper Cumberland Regional Airport in the midst of a wildlife assessment in order to improve security measures. Airport Manager Dean Selby said the assessment is happening thanks to a grant from the USDA to study the different wildlife in the area and how they impact the airport. Selby said wildlife is one of the biggest dangers to any aircraft whether it is commercial or general aviation.
PMVG Launches NextGen TV Station in Cookeville, Tenn.
BOULDER, Colo.—The Public Media Venture Group (PMVG), a business development consortium of 32 public stations, has launched NextGen broadcasting service on W35DZ-D, its low-power station in Cookeville, Tennessee. The launch was accomplished in collaboration with WCTE Central Tennessee PBS, a PMVG member station, which is hosting W35DZ’s transmitter and antenna at its Monterey tower location.
