PLEASANTON, Calif. ( KRON ) – Trump supporters in the Bay Area are coming together, in light of the attempted assassination of the former president. They gathered in Pleasanton on Monday afternoon.

Trump supporters say they are still reeling from what happened on Saturday, so they decided to gather and rally to show strength and unity. People driving home from work on I-580 honked in support of the rally.

Trump supporters described watching the assassination attempt on TV.

"We were watching it live and my wife broke down in tears. We didn’t know what was happening. It was gut-wrenching. We feared for the worse," said Ron Read, who came to the Pleasanton event from Livermore.

Supporters say they were relieved to see Trump was okay after being grazed by a bullet. He was seen at the Republican National Convention Monday night with a bandage over his right ear.

“I immediately knew he was okay because our President Trump showed resilience, threw his fist in the air and said ‘Let’s fight,'" said Raquel Brandt from Pleasanton.

Hours ahead of his appearance at the RNC, Trump announced Sen. J.D. Vance (R-Ohio) as his running mate. The 39-year-old is now in his first year in the U.S. Senate and has previously worked as a venture capitalist in Silicon Valley.

Trump supporters say they are very happy with a younger nomination.

"J.D. is a great choice. He had a lot of great choices to choose from. He’s smart, educated, came from very humble beginnings, worked his way up and he’s got youth on his side also. We need to get these dinosaurs out of here," said Read.

Some pro-Trump people said they had bottles thrown at them, have been called names and even had their cars keyed for expressing their support. But they all said they would continue to wear their MAGA hats and wave their flags in support of Trump, and now Vance.
