Breck boys hockey concluded its 2023-24 season Feb. 21 in a 5-4 Section 2A quarterfinal loss to Providence Academy at the Plymouth Ice Center.

Providence Academy entered the post-season with the fourth seed despite finishing the regular season with a 10-15 record, second to fifth-seed Breck in the Independent Metro Athletic Conference standings. The Lions did go 1-1 with Breck in their two conference games, winning their previous meeting 7-4.

The Lions showed their worth early on against Breck, scoring three goals in the first nine minutes via Louis Wehmann, Sammy Lewis and Jesse Varner to take a staggering lead. The goal from Wehmann came on Providence’s first shot on target.

Breck found hope of a comeback through two goals from junior Ben Amato in the first period. The first was a solo goal on a power play, while the second was a penalty shot amid a night of physical hockey. Before Breck could get used to the 3-2 scoreline, however, Wehmann scored on a power play to make it 4-2 going into intermission.

Providence Academy struck first in the second period, extending their lead to 5-2 with a goal from Brandon Sattler. Amato, assisted by Nate Miller and Zach Huotari, was there to answer, scoring in the final minute of the period to complete a hat trick and keep Breck in range of a comeback.

Amato was at it again late in the third period, scoring a short-handed goal to conclude an exceptional performance on the night. The comeback was not complete, however, and Providence Academy survived to win 5-4.

This result concluded Breck’s season. The Mustangs ended the season with a 14-11-1 overall record.

Amato concluded the season as top scorer and with the most points, scoring 32 goals and collecting 63 points. Senior Nate Miller was next up, scoring 22 goals and making 36 assists. Sophomore Garrett Trench and senior Paddy Greene earned 46 and 45 points, respectively.
