Polk County launches new pilot program aimed at detecting Alzheimer's in members of the Latino community
DES MOINES, Iowa — Polk County, in partnership with Broadlawns and the University of Northern Iowa, is launching a pilot program aimed at detecting and treating early symptoms of Alzheimer's in the Latino community. According to the Alzheimer's Association, Hispanic Americans have a greater risk of developing the disease.

New Oak Street Health clinic to open Friday

Before the renovation, the house located at 3114 Cottage Grove Ave. was divided into three apartment units. The Beacon Village in Des Moines provides affordable housing to formerly incarcerated women
DES MOINES, Iowa — The recently opened Beacon Village acts as both an affordable housing option and a place for women in crises to heal. The facility located at the old Village Inn Motel off of East Euclid Avenue and East 14th Street in Des Moines has 32 units and is a place designed specifically for women who struggled with addiction and formerly incarcerated women. In order to live there, residents must be employed, single without kids and at least six months sober.

Storm Lake City Council by 3-2 Vote Approves Increased Funding for Participation in a Community Betterment Program
The Storm Lake City Council Monday on a 3-2 vote approved updating the city’s participating cost in a Hometown Pride regional program. Hometown Pride is designed to create and improve local facilities, spaces, and events in a community. Last month, the council approved joining a group of eight other communities in the program, and capped the city’s contribution at ten thousand dollars annually. Since then, Spencer has had to withdraw from the group, at least temporarily, to focus on flood recovery, which changes Storm Lake’s annual contribution to approximately $12,375 per year for five years, assuming no other communities join.

Man Pleads Guilty to Striking Biker With Vehicle in Deadly Hit-And-Run in Cherokee
Cherokee, Iowa – A man accused of being involved in a fatal hit-and-run incident in Cherokee has pleaded guilty. According to court documents, 30-year-old Casey Herwig has pleaded guilty to one count of Knowingly Leaving The Scene of an Accident Resulting in Death, which is a class D felony. Herwig faces a maximum of ten years in prison, along with a fine between one thousand and ten thousand dollars.
