POCATELLO — A local author has just finished a guide book on the trails that surround Pocatello that’s sure be a helpful resource for anyone regardless of skill level.

Ryan Byers, author of “Pocatello Trail Guide: Hiking, Biking and Cross Country Skiing over 300 Miles of Trails around the Gate City” said the book serves as a guide to all the different trails in the area. It has information on more well-known trails such as City Creek and lesser known trails such as Blackrock Canyon.

“If you’re someone in Pocatello or the surrounding areas and are looking to explore the outdoors, this is a good resource,” he said.

The book has information on all the different trails. People will be able to learn something from it whether they are new to Pocatello or if they have been hiking the trails their whole lives.

“People of any skill will find something beneficial,” Byers said.

Byers had the idea to put the book together after discovering some of the lesser known trails in the Pocatello area. He said he grew up in The Gate City and thought he already knew them all.

“I found there were tons of trails that I had never heard of before,” he said. “I started exploring all the trail systems in the area.”

Discovering all the different trails systems made Byers want to put the book together because he wanted to give others a chance to explore the different trails and enjoy the outdoor activities that Pocatello offers.

“It was fun connecting the various trails to another, and I realized it would be something for people like me,” he said.

The goal with Pocatello Trail Guide is to help people feel comfortable exploring the different areas around the city and to show people all the things Pocatello has to offer.

“Having lived in Pocatello for so long, it has always frustrated me hearing people claim there isn’t anything to do,” Byers said. “With all the hiking, biking and cross country skiing trails, there are a bounty of recreation options available just five minutes from the city center.”

The best part about putting Pocatello Trail Guide together was watching it go from just an idea to having it come together into something. Byers made sure to highlight trails for people who may have young children with them or who may have wheelchairs.

“As the project came to fruition, it was nice to figure out where everything fit together and seeing Pocatello from these different angles,” he said. “It was fun to explore these new paths and appreciate the beauty of the area.”

Byers will hold a signing to promote the book at 6:30 p.m. on July 30 at Jim Dandy Brewing, which is located at 305 E. Lander St. He said there has been interest in Pocatello Trail Guide so far and he looks forward to seeing where it goes from here.

“The response has been really good,” he said. “It will be exciting to see who comes out to the book signing.”
