There’s a chill in the air that signals apple cider, pumpkins and sweater weather. (Notice I didn’t include pumpkin spice!) It also signals the appearance of ghosts and goblins and the chance for children to enjoy the thrill and excitement of being super-sugared at the month’s close. (Sorry in advance to parents and guardians!)

Time to take a look at the many events that the month of October offers. The peek into the month mentioned the Pocono Prayer Breakfast on Tuesday, Oct. 1, at Kalahari Resorts & Conventions Center. The event is an inspiriting morning with this year’s speaker, Darryl Strawberry. The event begins at 6:15 a.m. If you haven’t already made plans to attend, email poconoprayerbreakfast@gmail.com for reservations or questions.

The evening of Oct. 1 offers the opportunity to support the PATH House with the Women, Wine & Wisdom event at The Lake View Room at Trout Lake Event Center beginning at 5:30 p.m. The speaker for the evening is Anna Quindlen . Cost: $40 pp (per person). For more information visit: www.PATHhouse.org .

Oct. 2 offers a different adventure in fundraising to support the Eastern Monroe Public Library, Corks & Classics. The event will be held at Renegade Winery in Stroudsburg from 6 to 8 p.m. Cost is $25 pp and includes a glass of wine, a door prize ticket, raffle tickets and, of course, great food tastings. Tickets are available from the main branch of the library or at the door.

Early holiday shopping is possible at LVH-Pocono on Oct. 3. A linen sale will be held at the hospital cafeteria from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. and is open to the public. The sale is sponsored by the LVH Pocono Auxiliary.

On Oct. 5, there is something for everyone. Friends of the DWGNRA are offering a program on Environmental Exploration (adult/family) at the Middle Smithfield Township Community Center on Milford Road. The program will be presented by environmental education specialist Stephanie Sherman. It will be held from 1 to 3 p.m. Free to members, a $5 pp donation is requested and 18 and under are free. Adding to the weekend's events, the Pocono Food Truck Festival will be held at Shawnee Mountain on both Saturday, Oct. 5, and Sunday, Oct. 6, 11:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.

With a choice of either Oct. 5 or Oct. 6, the National Park Service is partnering with both The Pocono Writing Project and ESU’s College of Education to offer a free special program for educators, Poetry for the Planet. The program will run each day from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Dingmans Falls visitor center and will be nature focused. For educators, three hours of Act 48 credits will be awarded. Register through your school district or by contacting Dr. Andrew Gavalis at agavalis@esu.edu .

Are you an EMS provider who needs your Emergency Vehicle Driver training? Oct. 5 and 6, LVH-Pocono and Northampton Community College are co-sponsoring a course through the LVH-Pocono Learning Institute. Registration closes on Oct. 2. To register, contact Steve Kulick at Steven.Kulick@lvhn.org .

Looking for an evening out? The Eastern Monroe Public Library Bookhouse concert is at the library’s Hughes Branch Edinger Community Room (1002 N. 9th St., Stroudsburg) on Oct. 18 at 7 p.m. The event is free and this month’s artist is Areé, an R & B/hip-hop recording artist.

Finally, a note and nod to fans of Sinatra and the Rat Pack with the Bushkill Emergency Corps 5th Annual Gala being held on Saturday, Oct. 26 at Shawnee Inn & Golf Resort. The event begins at 6 p.m. and includes cocktail hour, dinner, dancing, and live entertainment with up and coming Vincent Romano and a silent auction. Cost is $60 pp. Group discounts available. Whew! There are plenty of chances to help community organizations, have fun with the family and even educational opportunities! That’s what a packed October looks like!
