The remaining days of Democratic National Convention will feature a slate of speakers who were considered to be Vice President Kamala Harris’ running mate, a clear decision to elevate the next generation of Democratic leaders on the heels of an emotional sendoff to President Joe Biden.

Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro, Sen. Mark Kelly of Arizona, Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, Maryland Gov. Wes Moore and Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker will deliver primetime addresses during the remaining three days of the convention, according to a person familiar with the planning and granted anonymity to discuss it. Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear, who had also been considered as a potential running mate, spoke Monday.

“Four years ago, President Biden made a promise to lift up the next generation of Democratic Party leaders, and he took every opportunity available to do it. His leadership helped not only Vice President Harris but also so many others become stars in our party,” Harris campaign co-chair Cedric Richmond said in a statement. “Now, Vice President Harris is picking up the baton. She is using her platform to elevate others, strengthening our party so that neither Donald Trump nor his extreme MAGA minions will come anywhere near the White House.”

While Monday night’s convention was an ode to Biden’s legacy — featuring speakers who are close to the president such as Sen. Chris Coons (D-Del.) — the programming throughout the rest of the week is designed to be more forward looking, focused on Harris and her vision for the country.

Part of that effort means uplifting the Democratic Party’s bench and showcasing the younger generation of the party who, led by Harris, are now the future of the party, according to the person familiar with convention planning.
