Duck Donuts opens first Iowa location in Polk City

POLK CITY, Iowa- Duck Donuts is celebrating the grand opening of its first Iowa location in Polk City on Saturday.

The donut shop is known across the country for customizable donuts. They sell vanilla cake donuts and customers choose any drizzle and topping. Owner Shane Torres said the options are seemingly endless.

Duck Donuts is unlike other donut shops because customers can also see how they are made. Torres said no matter the age, everyone loves to watch the warm donuts being made and employees decorating them.

Along with donuts, the shop also sells breakfast sandwiches, ice cream, and coffee. The breakfast sandwiches are made with a donut serving as the bread. Duck Donut partners with Blue Bunny Ice Cream, which is native to Iowa.

In just the first hour, Torres said they had about 50 customers. Some people traveled from Des Moines and Newton, while others committed to waiting hours.

“The first in line got here at 5:30 last night. So, he did camp out and someone joined him around 9pm, so we had two camp out last night… [They] really wanted the donuts,” said Torres.

The line even stretched outside of the shop. Torres and his staff provided free coffee to folks waiting in line. He said they will also provide water to customers waiting in line outside later this afternoon when temperatures rise.

They’re projecting to see between 300 and 400 people on Saturday.

Duck Donuts is open seven days a week from 6AM to 6PM. It is located at 1010 Tyler Street in Polk City.
