MAFFS Aircraft Deployed in Support of California Fires
At the request of the National Interagency Fire Center, U.S. Northern Command deployed two C-130 aircraft equipped with Modular Airborne Fire Fighting Systems (MAFFS) from California and Colorado for wildland firefighting operations from Channel Islands Air National Guard Station in Port Hueneme, California, over multiple fires in California. Two additional aircraft will also be activated later this week from Nevada and Wyoming.

Emergency family shelter for homeless in Sacramento to close in September
SACRAMENTO – An emergency family shelter for homeless people in Sacramento will be closing in September, the county said Wednesday. The family shelter on Bannon Street, which currently is housing more than a dozen families, will be closing on Sept. 7. Sacramento County funds the program that Volunteers of America (VOA) runs. The VOA has leased the building from the City of Sacramento since 2017. But now the county says the building, which was built in the 1970s, has major plumbing and sewer issues that cannot be fixed. San Diego, along with most of California, is ignoring a recent state law meant to make sure homeless shelters are clean and safe, per a new CalMatters investigation. Why it matters: Reports of unsafe shelters — from rodent infestations, flood risks, lack of heating and cooling, sewage problems and risk of sexual harassment — led state lawmakers in 2021 to create a new system to respond to complaints with inspections and file annual reports on shelter conditions.
