POMEROY — Nestled in Meigs County, Pomeroy is a short 24-mile drive from Athens.

The small town is located along the Ohio River, directly across from Mason, West Virginia.

Like Athens, Pomeroy was founded in 1804 and was later designated the county seat.

Although small, there is much beauty and local attractions within the town.

    Parks and recreation

There are quite a few campgrounds, parks and landmarks within the county that can be fun for a day trip.

Buffington Island Battlefield Memorial Park is located in Portland Township, a short drive from in-town Pomeroy. This is the site of the only significant Civil War battle in Ohio.

From July 13-26, 1863, Brigadier General John Hunt Morgan led a group of more than 2,000 men across Southern Ohio.

On the morning of July 19, the two-hour battle resulted in six dead and 20 wounded on the Union side, and 57 killed and 63 wounded on the Confederate side.

Near the site is the plaque of Major Daniel McCook, who was mortally wounded in the Battle of Buffington Island.

This memorial provides a great look into the history of Pomeroy.

Another scenic area in Meigs County is Wisteria Campground .

Located in the Pomeroy/Harrisonville area, Wisteria is a site for many events, such as Birds in the Hills Festival, Stargazer Festival, and Starwood Cannabis Festival.

Although it serves as a venue for festivals, it is also a good place to camp.

The outdoor locations are great options for those looking to spend a day or weekend within nature, but still explore what Pomeroy has to offer.

If you prefer to take to the water, Pomeroy offers several boat ramps allowing people to place boats, kayaks and more in the Ohio River.

There is even a dock at the McDonald's, where people can pull up their boat and then head up to the fast food restaurant.

Pomeroy is located on higher ground than neighboring Mason, West Virginia. As easier to access ramp is across the river, in the West Virginia town, that also has the local Walmart.

    Food

If you’re looking to spend a day within the area, there are quite a few options for good eats.

A local favorite spot on the river is the coffee shop and café River Roasters . They serve a variety of espresso drinks as well as tea, smoothies, and a large menu of baked goods and food, all made in-house.

Some of the popular items on their food menu include breakfast sandwiches, avocado toast, biscuits and gravy, and BLT sandwiches.

Fox’s Pizza is a local pizza restaurant serving pizza, subs, stromboli, wings and cookie pizzas. They offer dining-in or you can order to go.

Another local dining option is McClure’s Restaurant , which serves old-fashioned fast food such as burgers, hot dogs, fries, onion rings, and many ice cream desserts. They have shakes, sundaes, flurries, and strawberry shortcake.

Another option for something sweet is the newly-opened Harlee’s Scoops , which has a variety of different ice cream flavors as well as sundaes.

For those looking for fresh local produce, plants, art, soap and more, visit the Meigs County Farmers Market .

The market is open 10 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturdays on the Pomeroy Levee, beside Main Street, in Pomeroy.

In 2023, the six-year-old market placed second overall in the 15th annual America’s Farmers Market Celebration, a national event honoring the role of farmers markets. The market was also named the regional winner for the Midwest and for the state of Ohio. The market is usually open until late October.

    Shopping

If you’re stopping in town to experience something new, there are also plenty of local stores and shops to visit.

Sweet Southern Boutique , located next to Dollar General, has many different fashion styles available, specializing in women’s clothing, though they also carry men’s.

If you’re into thrifting, My Best Friend’s Closet is also located nearby. They carry clothes on consignment, where you can find trendy clothing for a cheaper price.

Weaving Stitches is a local gift shop, where you can find home decor, clothes, candles, jewelry, and much more. There are plenty of items, and something for everyone.

By visiting these outdoor locations as well as shops and restaurants, you can support local businesses while embarking on a new adventure in Pomeroy.
