The math seemed impossible, but numbers don’t lie — it was less expensive for Julie Kelley to send her 9-year-old son to seven different summer camps in three states than to enroll him in one full-time program in Vermont, where they live. Summer vacation lasts 10 weeks for...
Morgan board has watery meeting
MORGAN — The select board addressed the aftermath of recent flooding at its meeting Monday night. Although not as intense as it was in 2023, this year’s flood caused ground waters to swell enough to leave residents with all-too-familiar damage. Fortunately, moving toward repairs and preparations for future storms hasn’t been as difficult, even if it isn’t going as quickly as some might desire.

Barre Heritage Festival Begins July 24
Despite a second year in a row of major flooding in its downtown, Barre is going forward with a full four-day schedule for the Barre Heritage Festival from July 24 to July 27. In 2023, the celebration had to be postponed from July to September because of a more destructive flood that occurred on the same dates — July 10 and 11 — as this year’s devastating but less destructive flood. The heritage festival has been held in Barre on and off in different iterations since the early 1970s to celebrate the history and ethnicity of the town.

Flood Disaster 2.0: Community Steps Up
If anything positive came out of the destructive 2023 flood last July, it was that communities such as Barre, Montpelier, and Waterbury learned how to jump into action in the event of a disaster. And a disaster happened again, on July 10 and 11, the exact dates of last year’s flood. Local organizations immediately kicked into gear raising funds, showing up with wheelbarrows and shovels, donating supplies, and assisting flooded neighboring communities.

It seemed fitting...
A Message from City Hall: Flood Recovery, One Year Later, 2024
One year ago to the day of last year’s catastrophic flooding, our city awoke to a flood watch due to the remnants of Hurricane Beryl making its way up the east coast. While Montpelier was largely spared from most of the damage, our neighboring towns in Barre, Waterbury, Middlesex, and Plainfield weren’t as lucky. As this past year has made crystal clear, flooding continues to be one of the biggest challenges we’ve ever had to face as a community.
Pet of the Week: Zillion
Zillion is a bashful boy who is seeking a library-quiet home to grow up in! Zillion is about 11 months old and doesn’t mind human attention, but he does look for a companion that he can slowly get to know. He came to CVHS when his family was no longer able to care for him. We feel that a calm home would be the best fit for Zillion because of his shy personality. Zillion has only been an indoor cat and had no canine friends in his previous home. He is currently in a room with other feline friends and is doing okay.
