Dylan Mason of Ponte Vedra Beach birdied four of his first seven holes at the Glenview Champions Country Club at The Villages on Saturday and is tied for the lead in the 70th Florida State Golf Association Junior Boys with Shawn Coultoff of Winter Garden at 7-under-par 65.

Mason, a member of the Ponte Vedra High state championship team of 2023 and an incoming freshman at Flagler College, made nine birdies before his first bogey on the final hole that cost him sole possession of the lead. Mason is one of seven members of the Sharks golf program in the tournament.

Coultoff came from behind to tie Mason with birdies at Nos. 15, 16 and 18.

Luke Splane and Jaspreet Kondal of St. Augustine both posted bogey-free 66s and are tied for third at 6-under. Kondal is tied for first in the 13-15 division with Sohan Patel of Weston and Jessy Huebner of Port St. Lucie.

Maxwell Morgan of Ponte Vedra Beach (67), eagled the 16th hole and is tied for seventh overall and tied for fourth in the 13-15 division. Samuel Ha (68) of St. Augustine is tied for 11th overall and Henry Robards of Ponte Vedra an Ethan Tak of St. Augustine (69) are tied for 18th.

“I played well, just kind of played my game," Mason told fsga.org. "I came into this playing pretty well, so that felt nice to know that I can shoot a good number if I can keep everything in check. Wedges were really good today, hit a lot of close shots, and made the putts. I wasn’t giving myself a hard day today.”

The field will play at Club Adena in Ocala for the second round on Sunday. After the cut is made to the low-70, plus ties, the final round will be Monday at Adena.

Nancy Cox battles in Women’s Stroke Play

Nancy Cox of Ponte Vedra Beach birdied four holes in a row during one stretch and with a 69 at the Aberdeen Golf and Country Club in Boynton Beach, moved within two shots of the lead in the 30th Florida Women’s Stroke Player Championship.

Cox is 4-under 140 and in a tie for fourth with former University of North Florida player One Kashima (71). Lauren Clark of Orlando (68), Caroline Patterson of Jupiter (67) and Madison Moman of Palm Beach Gardens (69) are tied for first at 6-under 138.

Cox was even par for the day at the turn, then birdied Nos. 10, 11, 12 and 13. She bogeyed No. 16.

Kate Bibby of St. Augustine (69) is alone in sixth at 3-under.
