Why some cats scratch more than others
For many cat owners, torn furniture seems to come with the territory. Our feline friends have an innate instinct to use their claws and scratch, that humans often view as a behavioral problem to be corrected. Recently, a team of researchers recently explored what factors influence domestic cats to scratch and found it’s not necessarily simply tied to a bad kitty. Personality traits, the presence of small children, and the type of play cats are engaging in have a significant impact on scratching behavior. The findings are detailed in a study published July 3 in the journal Frontiers in Veterinary Science and points to some ways that cat owners can try to prevent scratching.
Lab-grown human brain tissue used to control robot

Fish in Earth’s hottest water defy the odds

This inedible, indestructible moss may help humans thrive on Mars
In terms of being hard-to-kill, few animals are more resilient than the tiny tardigrade. But the “water bear” isn’t the planet’s only nearly indestructible, extremotolerant living organism—an assuming desert moss known as Syntrichia caninervis can survive in some of the most inhospitable environments. Regardless of blistering heat, punishing cold, aridity, cloud cover, or radiation, S. caninervis can likely withstand the otherwise deadly conditions. And according to researchers, that’s what makes the plant a perfect Martian transplant.

How beavers are helping the Tule River Tribe of California fight wildfires
This story was originally published by Grist. Sign up for Grist’s weekly newsletter here. After a decade of work, the Tule River Tribe has released nine beavers into the nation’s reservation in the foothills of California’s southern Sierra Nevada mountains. The beavers are expected to make the landscape more fire and drought resistant. Beaver dams trap water in pools, making the flow of water slower so the surrounding ecosystem can reap the benefits of the moisture while making it more difficult for forest fires to start. They can also help a forest heal after a fire by rehydrating the area.
