Port Charlotte High School’s Naval Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps (NJROTC) recently held its annual awards ceremony, honoring the dedication and achievements of its cadets. This year’s ceremony, which took place on May 1 at Port Charlotte High School, marked a significant milestone for Pirate Company, the school’s NJROTC unit.

Pirate Company was recognized as the Most Improved Unit in South Florida’s Area 12, reflecting the hard work and dedication of its cadets and instructors. Additionally, Port Charlotte NJROTC received the prestigious Distinguished Unit Award, positioning it among the top programs in the state. This recognition is particularly noteworthy as it marks the first time since 2012 that the unit has earned this accolade.

During the ceremony, a formal change of command took place, symbolizing the transition of leadership within the unit. Cadet Lt. Cmdr. Salina Tuthill was relieved of command by her younger sister, Cadet Lt. Cmdr. Kira Tuthill, marking a special moment for the Tuthill family. Similarly, Pirate Company’s executive officer, Cadet Lt. Joshua Blair, passed on the reins of leadership to Cadet Lt. Kimberly Burton.

Looking ahead, Cadet Salina Tuthill plans to continue her academic journey at Florida Gulf Coast University in the fall, where she will pursue a degree in psychology. Meanwhile, Cadet Blair has chosen to serve his country by enlisting in the U.S. Navy. He will train as a fleet marine force hospital corpsman and is set to depart for Navy basic training next month.

Superintendent Mark Vianello commended the achievements of Port Charlotte NJROTC, saying, “They’ve made their community, veterans, school and families incredibly proud. Keep up the outstanding work, Port Charlotte NJROTC!”

The achievement of PCHS’s NJROTC program is a testament to the dedication and service of its cadets. Within Pirate Company, these students consistently uphold the values of honor, courage and commitment, setting a commendable example for their peers and the wider community. ¦
