The 9-year-old Saltaire Oyster Bar and Fish House in Port Chester, known for its raw bar, innovative cocktails and midweek "Saltire Supper" deals (it was in my "Summer Bucket List" story), is closing July 14.
Owners Beth and Les Barnes said the reason was a lease issue and that they are "devastated."
"Saltaire was a survivor in the neighborhood when everyone else closed," said Beth Barnes. "And we remain strong, so this news will be a blow to the community.
"It's a shock to us this couldn't work out."
The circa-1900 building where Saltaire is located, once home to the Willett House steakhouse, was transformed under the Barnes leadership into a stylish, modern spot with nostalgic nautical touches, oversized chandeliers, and a bustling three-sided, marble-topped raw bar with an extensive oyster selection.

The restaurant has also been known for its spirited cocktail program, as well as Les' commitment to the craft (he would frequently explain the ins and outs of fresh fish on the restaurant's Instagram account) and dash of humor. Case in point: the signage in the back with explanations of the seafood with playful headlines like "Who's Your Daddy?" "Bed Hopper" and "Better Than One Night Schuck."
The couple are hoping old and new customers will come for their last hurrah and say goodbye. They plan to have live music on the final night in addition to dinner service.
The two also want to remind folks their other seafood restaurant, London Lennie's in Queens, is just a short drive away, 15 minutes from the Whitestone Bridge. And, they hint perhaps pop-ups at local restaurants may be in the future.
Lease issues seem to be the main driver behind why so many Westchester restaurants closing. Longtime Mediterranean spot The Greek-ish closed earlier this year in Harrison. More recently Town Dock in Rye, Rye House in Port Chester and Francesco's in White Plains closed.
