If you’re looking for lavender, Sequim remains the place to go — after nearly 30 years of embracing the purple, pink and white plant. Sequim’s first lavender event, the Sequim Lavender Festival, now in its 28th year, started as a one-day event on Aug. 2, 1997. Since then, lavender as an attraction has grown exponentially to now feature the all-encompassing Sequim Lavender Weekend set this year for July 19-21, with more offerings available through the summer and year.
Certified nurse-midwife joins Women’s Health at OMC
Certified nurse-midwife Jacqueline Clubine has joined Olympic Medical Physician’s Women’s Health team, Olympic Medical Center (OMC) officials announced in early July. Clubine will provide women’s health and midwifery services to patients on the Olympic Peninsula. She joins the Women’s Health Clinic team, which together provides well-woman care, contraception, and pregnancy and postpartum care. She will see patients at the OMP Women’s Health clinics in Sequim and Port Angeles.
Edmonds Sand Sculpture contest gets underway July 19
An annual summer tradition, the Edmonds Sand Sculpture contest is scheduled for Friday, July 19 at Brackett’s Beach, just south of the Edmonds-Kingston ferry terminal. Check-in at the Edmonds Waterfront Center Wedding Circle, just outside the Waterfront Center at 220 Railroad Ave. Registration opens at 11 a.m. and judging starts at 1 p.m. Bucket awards are presented at 2:30 p.m.
Langley leaders reconsider public safety sales tax
Langley officials are once again considering a public safety sales tax. The topic resurfaced during a city council meeting this week, with unanimous approval for a resolution authorizing a submission for a proposal in the increase in city sales tax of 0.1%, which would bring in an estimated $51,000 annually. Voters will have the chance to accept or reject the new tax when it appears on the November ballot.
Langley limits short-term rentals
In response to the growing housing crisis on South Whidbey, the Langley City Council has decided to limit the number of a certain type of short-term rental unit. The council unanimously agreed to reduce the capacity of type IV short term rental permits from 30 to 15, which was suggested by Councilmember Craig Cyr.
