As hot as it was on Sunday at Avista Stadium, EJ Andrews Jr probably didn’t mind the Gatorade bath at the end. I biked 30 miles to play late night hockey in Everett, then biked another 30 home
As a kid growing up in the suburbs of St. Louis, I was obsessed with hockey. One of my earliest hockey memories was watching Brett Hull score 50 goals in 50 games when I was five years old. I spent so much time on inline skates in my driveway or nearby church parking lots that a wheel on my Roller Blades fell off and I broke my finger in the fall. I also played ice hockey from kindergarten through high school. And when I was inside, I played NHL ’95 on my SEGA. But then I went to college in small city that didn’t have a rink, and then I moved around a bit before landing in Seattle with no car, very little money and very little storage space. For 13 years, hockey was just this thing I did when I was younger.
Mill stench needs team effort
“Yuck, the stench is back again! Shut the windows!”. That phrase is muttered too often around here, usually around midnight, just after falling asleep. How is it that the warmest nights seem to attract the foulest emanations from the paper mill? Just how bad is this stuff for us and why do we put up with it?

Herald owners should reconsider staffing cuts
On the televised news recently, I watched as passionate people marched in an effort to save jobs and (realistically, perhaps) save a newspaper. Recent changes in The Daily Herald have been troubling for me. I am not a fan of online reading, nor do I like mail delivery. I have been a subscriber for 50 years and deem this latest blow to the local Herald community a potential death knell.
Do the owners of The Herald not see its value to community?
As a child of a Herald reporter, I was always surrounded by newspapers and books. I was taught the importance of being informed; of listening to and understanding all sides of an issue or story. Not only did this help in forming my own opinions and beliefs, but also taught the importance of remaining open to other ideas as we make out way through life.
