PORT HURON — Port Huron is accepting nominations for the "Spirit of Port Huron Awards," hoping to continue a decades-long tradition of celebrating local leaders.

“I know there’s a lot of very worthy people in the city of Port Huron that should get a nomination for one of these categories,” Repp said during a council meeting.

“… Basically, if we do not get a big amount of people applying, we’re going to have to pass on the program this year because we don’t have very many responses. And we’ve done that before. Not passed on it, but we’ve made that call at the last minute and people have come through. So, I’m trying to make that call.”

The program, initiated by council in 1986, seeks to honor outstanding residents who've made significant contributions to the community. While the celebration is scheduled for Sept. 23, nominations must be submitted by July 15.

“It's just a wonderful program,” City Clerk Cyndee Jonseck told The Times Herald.

    There are eight award categories:

    • Brotherhood, which recognizes leaders in promoting harmony and goodwill.
    • Civic, for those who've significantly contributed to making Port Huron a better place to live, work and play.
    • Cultural, which recognizes art and heritage advocates.
    • Economic Progress, which celebrates individuals or businesses that have invested in the community to improve the economic climate and quality of life.
    • Good Neighbor, reserved for exceptionally helpful residents.
    • Heroism, honoring those who've risked their lives to save others in a spontaneous act.
    • Life Achievement, celebrating individuals who’ve devoted significant time to community betterment.
    • Youth Service, which recognizes outstanding community service by young people.
