PORT HURON — A cartoon that many have grown up with is being brought to life on stage at McMorran Place.

"SpongeBob the Musical" is based off the Nickelodeon cartoon "SpongeBob SquarePants," which follows the sea sponge, SpongeBob, and his friends in Bikini Bottom. The musical will take its audience through their very own episode of the cartoon. Director Danyel Lloyd said Port Huron Civic Theatre wanted to put on a fun show that could showcase the variety of talent the community has to offer.

"It's such a good show," Lloyd said. "It's got a great message and is a lot of fun. The cast is pumped to put this on."

There will be four chances for people to watch "SpongeBob the Musical." Show times are 7 p.m. on Aug. 9, 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. on Aug. 10 and 2 p.m. on Aug. 11. All performances take place at McMorran Place, located at 701 McMorran Blvd.

Tickets are $20 for general seating and $22 for premium, and can be purchased at www.mcmorran.com/shows. Lloyd said there are scams going around, so people should only purchase through McMorran's website.

The cast of "SpongeBob the Musical" is made up of about 60 people.

Brad Hardecki is playing SpongeBob in the show. He said it's a lot of fun to play such an iconic character, and he's been focusing on making the character his own, rather than directly copying from the original cartoon.

"There are flares of the original show, but we're striving for this to not be like a cartoon," he said. "The show has a lot of heart."

Sarah Bernard, who plays Pearl, said the show will be very nostalgic to people who grew up watching "SpongeBob." She said the musical is like its own episode of the cartoon.

Bernard said the show is very bright and colorful.

"It's just fun chaos," she said.

Want a sneak peek of the show? Come to the Young Leaders Council Prom

Port Huron Civic Theatre recently launched its Young Leaders Council, and its inaugural event will be a prom. The theme of the prom will be "Under the Sea" to correlate with "SpongeBob the Musical." In addition to music and dancing, attendees can enjoy karaoke, games and photo opportunities.

Some of the "SpongeBob the Musical" cast will also be at the prom.

"We're going to have some of the cast performing," said Lucy Fabick, head of the Young Leaders Council. "So, if kids want to see a sneak peek of the show, they can come to this."

Tickets for the prom are $25 per person and includes dinner from Kate's Downtown. Tickets can be purchased at www.phct.com/phct-young-leaders. The prom will take place from 6 to 10 p.m. on Aug. 3 at the Marysville Community Center, located at 867 E. Huron Blvd.

The event is open to youth in the area between sixth and 12th grade. Fabick said attendees do not have to be involved in theatre to come.

The goal of the prom is for the Young Leaders Council raise money to eventually put on their own show and to learn the skills to organize events.
