    One injured in Whipple Street house fire

    PORT HURON — An 18-year-old was hospitalized after a fire broke out in his basement Friday morning.

    The Port Huron Fire Department was called to a house fire In the 1700 block of Whipple Street at 5:44 a.m.

    Battalion Chief Chris Shattuck said the fire has since been extinguished. Shattuck said the 18-year-old man had suffered from burns and smoke inhalation. He did not know the victim's status or what hospital he was taken to.

    The fire appeared to have started in the basement, Shattuck said. Firefighters were able to extinguish the blaze before it consumed the house, limiting fire damage to the basement and smoke damage to the first floor. The fire department is investigating the cause of the fire.
