    Jury selection begins for Port Lavaca man facing murder charges

    Jury selection on Monday

    PORT LAVACA, Texas – Jury selection began Monday for a 23-year-old Port Lavaca man facing murder charges.

    Blake Downs is accused of shooting 19-year-old Coewin Boerm at Downs' home on Holloman Road in Port Lavaca in April 2022. The trial began Monday morning at 9 a.m.

    Authorities say both the victim and the suspect were intoxicated at the time of the shooting.

    If found guilty, Downs could face a sentence ranging from 5 to 99 years or life in prison. Judge Tim Williams, who is presiding over the case, predicts the trial will last well into next week.
