Employee at Savannah McDonald’s sentenced to federal prison for dumpster fire he started with ‘piece of cardboard’
Joshua Daryl McGregor of Savannah has been sentenced to five years in federal prison after pleading guilty to setting ablaze an outside dumpster at the McDonald's he worked for once the drive-thru got too busy, according to a press release issued Wednesday by the United States Attorney’s Office (USAO). McGregor, 34, of Savannah, was sentenced to 60 months in prison after pleading guilty to arson, said Jill E. Steinberg, U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of Georgia. District Court Judge Lisa Godbey Wood also ordered McGregor to pay restitution for property lost in the fire, and to serve three years of supervised release upon completion of his prison term.
Chief at center of lawsuit alleging racial bias within Savannah Fire Department
Savannah Fire Department (SFD) Chief Elzie Kitchen as an individual and the City of Savannah as a municipality are the primary targets of a July 10, 2024 lawsuit brought by SFD Captain and former Battalion Chief, Jeffrey Croslen, in U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Georgia. The lawsuit is the latest effort by Croslen to bring to light what he describes as “a long and entrenched history of (SFD) passing over qualified African-American officers for top-level leadership positions.”
Everyone Hates J.D. Vance: Poll
Just when J.D. Vance thought his polling numbers couldn’t get worse, they have. Vance’s net negative favorability rating was a major topic of discussion during a Tuesday night CNN roundtable. According to this week’s ABC News/IPSOS polling, Donald Trump’s running mate is polling at a staggeringly low minus 15 points. “It’s the worst vice presidential pick of my lifetime,” said CNN’s Harry Enten. Last week, coming out of the Republican National Convention, Vance had a negative six-point favorability rating that has more than doubled this week. According to the Enten, the senator is the first vice presidential candidate to average...

US suspends $95 million in aid to Georgia after passage of foreign agent law that sparked protests
WASHINGTON (AP) — The Biden administration on Wednesday suspended $95 million in U.S. assistance to Georgia after its parliament adopted legislation related to foreign agents that critics say was inspired by a Russian law used to crack down on political dissent and that sparked weeks of mass protests. Secretary of State Antony Blinken said that he had decided to pause the Georgian aid, which would directly benefit the government, as the result of a review of assistance that he ordered in May after the law passed. He said he took the action in response to “anti-democratic” actions the government has taken. The U.S. has also already imposed visa bans on a number of Georgian politicians and law enforcement officials for suppressing free speech, particularly voices in favor of Georgia’s integration with the West. “The Georgian government’s anti-democratic actions and false statements are incompatible with membership norms in the EU and NATO,” Blinken said in a statement released as he was flying from Singapore to Mongolia at the end of a six-nation tour of Asia.
