The Treasure Coast made Allstate Insurance's America’s Best Drivers Report released Thursday. Among the top 100 most populous urban areas, Port St. Lucie ranked 61st, with 1 meaning the safest drivers and 100 meaning the riskiest.

The insurance company's 16th annual report was broken down into three categories: hard braking, high speed and phone handling. Here's how Port St. Lucie ranked:

    • 18th for hard braking
    • 48th for phone handling
    • 100th for high speed

“Speeding, distracted and impaired driving cause tens of thousands of preventable deaths on U.S. roads each year,” Allstate Senior Vice President Katie Irey told USA TODAY. “This usage-based insurance data helps educate about common risky driving behaviors ... to promote safe driving and help save lives on the road.”

The report found Honolulu has the safest drivers while Albuquerque, New Mexico, has the riskiest.

Allstate's methodology includes calculating when its customers' drove over 80 mph, decelerated more than 7 mph in one second, and used their smartphones while driving. Allstate obtained the data through its Drive Safe app.
