PORT ST. LUCIE — The Port St. Lucie Police Athletic League has a premier boxing program in its gym at 2101 S.E. Tiffany Ave.

The program is open to ages 8 to 18 and features Olympic-style boxing and training, including a workout in calisthenics, strength, and agility, and intense endurance training.

Students are required to register with USA Boxing, as members choose to participate in competition for medals, trophies, and championship belts. Currently, the boxing program is limited to 15 or 16 participants who train 6 to 7:45 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

“We have passion for the sport," said boxing coach Luis Ramirez. "When you have passion, you help the kids to achieve their goals.”

He said it's rewarding to work hard with a student who then performs.

"As soon as they win, I feel I did my job. It’s all about achieving goals, and the passion for the sport,” Ramirez said.

The Port St. Lucie PAL also features a karate program for boys and girls ages 6 to 18, from 6:30 to 8 p.m. on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, There are costs and fees for each program.

For information about these or other programs, or to register, contact the PSL Police Athletic League at 772-398-9436 or visit the website: cityofpsl.com/pal
