GDOT plans to shift traffic to Houlihan Bridge July 15

The Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) is planning to shift traffic onto the new State Route 25 or Houlihan Bridge over the Savannah River beginning Monday, July 15, weather permitting.

Built in 1922, the Houlihan Bridge was the last working turnstile or swing bridge, taking Georgia 25 over the Savannah and Middle rivers into South Carolina. It was one of the only bridges in Chatham County that was rated in "poor condition" by the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), and in 2021, it was set to be demolished and replaced after GDOT procured $65.5 million in state and federal funding.

Although the bridge will reopen Monday, weather permitting, the project isn't complete. Demolition of the old structure will begin following the opening of the new SR 25/Houlihan Bridge, according to a press release from the City of Port Wentworth.

"Obviously opening up the roadway is going to be fantastic," said City Manager Steve Davis. "It's a huge improvement for commuters that are coming into the area. We're excited to have a project like this with the investment from the state to get it done. It's a key corridor from South Carolina and an emergency route when need be."

Traffic approaching the bridge from both directions will be shifted half a mile before the waterway. While the new bridge is open, those crossing it may experience periodic lane closures while crews address finishing touches.

Those visiting the Houlihan Park Boat Ramp still will be able to access it by a new entrance and exit located 0.1 miles west of the existing entrance and exit. The entrance and exit for the Savannah National Wildlife Refuge at Onslow Island is also moving farther east for access between the island bridge.

Work will be ongoing on the neighboring SR 25 bridge over the Middle River, with a projected completion schedule for fall 2025.
