BREAKING: Portage Co. inmate is on the run, sheriff says
Portage County Jail inmate Matthew J. Garsomke, 28, is on the run after failing to return from a court-issued furlough on Friday morning. Garsomke was released from jail at 10:30 a.m. on June 28 for a three-hour furlough granted by the Portage County Circuit Courts. He was scheduled to return to the jail at 1:30 p.m. but did not comply with the furlough order.

Stevens Point — U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders visited Stevens Point on a rainy Friday, drawing a crowd of about 500 people at Pfiffner Pioneer Park. The Portage County Democratic Party sponsored the event. Co-chair Gary Hawley said the rally, advertised as a town hall, was held in partnership with the Wisconsin Democratic Seniors Council and the WisDems Rural Caucus. Representatives from all three groups spoke briefly before Sanders took the stage.
Portage County Executive John Pavelski remains on medical leave with no timeline for return
STEVENS POINT – Portage County Executive John Pavelski remains on temporary medical leave of absence, according to a Wednesday statement from the executive’s office. Pavelski’s leave was announced via news release over a month ago on May 21, and Wednesday's statement was the first update provided by the executive's office. Neither statement included any information on a timeline for Pavelski's return.
