    New director: Madison College-Portage students want more face-to-face interaction

    Surveyed students said they want more in-person instruction at Madison College’s Portage campus in the 2021-22 school year and the college listened. “I think they missed each other,” said Shawna Marquardt, regional director for the Portage and Reedsburg campuses. “Students here missed that face-to-face interaction and working in collaboration. It’s nice to have an instructor right in front of you when you have questions, because certain courses just translate better in person.” Read more

    Robert D. "Butch" Wheeler

    Watertown, WI - Robert D. Wheeler (Butch), 85, of Watertown, and formerly of Portage passed away peacefully on Wednesday, July 28, 2021 at UW Hospital in Madison. Robert was born on March 22, 1936 in Portage, WI, the son of Donald and Charlotte (Schult) Wheeler. Bob served our Country in the US Marine Corp from 1956-1959; "Semper Fi". He married the love of his life Barbara (Maass) on December 5, 1959, and the couple enjoyed 61 years of marriage. Before moving to Watertown he was a police officer in Portage. Bob enjoyed collecting things, gardening, and was an amazing story teller. Before retiring Bob was the owner of the Watertown Moving and Storage Company. Read more

    A pair of community events are back this year with the goal of connecting police and the community for one night. National Night Out is traditionally celebrated on the first Tuesday in August and was started as a police-awareness event, but in recent years has expanded to include a number of first responder personnel including firefighters and EMS workers.
