Howard speaks to the Wiregrass Chapter
The Wiregrass Chapter, Georgia Society Sons of the American Revolution, held its monthly meeting on Thursday night, July 11, at McKinney Pond’s Restaurant in Midville. With President Steve Burke presiding, they had 26 in attendance. President Steve called on Chaplain Emory Fennell to give the invocation, led the Pledge to the U.S. Flag and the Pledge to the Sons of the American Revolution. President Steve discussed what the Chapter had been involved in the past 30 days and also the upcoming events. President Steve then called on Registrar Dess Smith III to introduce the speaker for the evening. Dess introduced Veteran Laura Howard who presented her program on “Women’s Contribution to the Military and Country”. President Steve then called on Chaplain Emory to say the benediction and led the Sons of the American Revolution Recessional.

Smartphone Photography exhibit opens at Kalmanson Gallery
The Kalmanson Gallery of Emanuel Arts Council will feature artwork by thirteen students in Group 1080 of East Georgia State College. This unique art show will feature Smartphone Photography. Opening reception for the show will be July 18th, from 5 to 7 p.m. and is free and open to the public. The exhibition is on display now through August.
Swainsboro Police Department Scavenger Hunt
The Police Department Scavenger Hunt began June 3, at 4:30 p.m. In addition to the winners that ran in the paper on June 18 and 25, Josie Radford found rock#18 at McRae Vet Clinic, Tinsley Sherrod found rock#16 at Southeastern Tech and Briar Jones found rock #17 at the old Coke Plant, Everleigh Lovehall found rock #20 at Red’s Quick Lube & Tire, Ellie Rountree found rock #19 at the Animal Shelter, Jackson Drew found rock #21 at Luck Gambrell Park and Charlie McNeely found rock #22 at Church Street Manor. The last two rocks, #23 and 24, have been hidden but not found as of press time.

Lawson Frye presents speech to Exchange
On Tuesday, July 9, 2024 Lawson Frye presented his speech titled “A Voyage of Adventure” to the Swainsboro Exchange Club. He recently won the State Jr. Beta Club contest with this speech and took 2nd in the nation out of 50 contestants at the National Jr. Beta Club Convention which was held in Savannah on June 10. Lawson is a rising 9th grader at Emanuel County Institute. He is the son of Peyton and Brooke Frye of Swainsboro. He is the grandson of Butch and Melanie Frye and Mike and Vicki Youmans.
Community Action for Youth makes donation
Community Action for Youth, Inc. President Mrs. Betty Davis and Secretary Mrs. Mary Connor, present a $200 dollar check to Mr. and Mrs. Ronnie Shumake for their annual Bookbag Drive in honor of Mrs. Patrice Dukes. Emory receives $5 million grant to improve geriatric care and education
Emory University has been awarded a $5 million cooperative agreement by the U.S. Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) to enhance geriatric care and education for health care workers in Georgia’s urban and rural areas. This five-year funding will support Georgia Gear (Geriatrics Workforce Enhancement Program), operated through the Department of Family and Preventive Medicine at Emory University School of Medicine.
