The ReBuilding Center on North Mississippi Avenue in Portland gives people the F.Y.I. on D.I.Y.The center offers a basic carpentry class, where people can get the basics on being handier with projects around the house.They also have classes on basic electrical, plumbing, and other skills that can help you save money on home projects by doing it yourself."Often when they finish a class, it's just pride, folks are feeling of what they learned and the skills gained," said Jack Bouba, the Senior Manager of Programs and Partnerships at The ReBuilding Center.The center is launching a new mobile program, so even more people can feel empowered."It's getting increasingly important to take our classes on the road to folks who are transit-dependent, low-income homeowners and renters," said Bouba.They can take these workshops directly to people who could benefit the most, thanks to a grant from Metro.The money paid for an electric van that they'll take into neighborhoods.After the class, if people use materials from The ReBuilding Center on a home project, they'll help protect the environment as well."For the 25-year history of the organization, The ReBuilding Center has been doing its part to keep perfectly wonderful, usable materials out of the landfill," Bouba said.Their store is full of salvaged material from deconstructed and renovated homes."It's part of protecting people's health, and the health of the environment when we reduce waste,” said Cary Stacey with Metro.She said supporting programs like this, is central to their goal of reducing waste."Metro has prioritized investing in community organizations that are promoting reuse and repair in the greater Portland area, and The ReBuilding Center is really a flagship organization when it comes to reduce, reuse, and repair," said Stacey.</div></body>
