PORTLAND, Ore. ( KOIN ) — Alex and Mary Gunnels said their kids were asleep when shots rang out Wednesday night in their neighborhood on Southeast Clinton in Portland.

“All of a sudden we see lights, we hear shouting and there’s a man flaying around in our yard,” Mary told KOIN 6 News. “I was in state of frozen. I didn’t know what to think or do.”

Around 8:30 p.m. that night, officers rushed to their neighborhood after one man was shot in the shoulder by someone he knew. The suspect, identified as Tyler Valenzuela Price, also allegedly slashed a woman in the hand, threatened another neighbor with the knife and stabbed a third neighbor in the neck.

Price tried to run away but officers used a Taser to stop him. Authorities said that at some point during the incident, Price shot himself in the hand.

“I see a man laying in my front yard. He’s bloody, there’s a bunch of cops on top of him and I realize luckily I’m not the target,” Alex said. “Just trying to figure out why there’s a bloody man in my front yard getting arrested.”

The 29-year-old suspect was taken to the hospital for treatment of his injuries. When he was released Saturday he was booked into the Multnomah County Jail on 13 charges: four counts of second-degree attempted murder, three counts of second-degree assault, four counts of unlawful use of a weapon and two counts of menacing.

His older brother, Austin Price, told KOIN 6 News Tyler Price was dealing with drug addiction and mental health issues and didn’t mean to hurt anyone.

“I got a call from my brother that he was experiencing a mental health crisis. He was, like, ‘People are coming to kill me,'” Austin said. “The victim was my best friend. He knows my brother. We’ve seen this progression and it’s never looked like that.”

He hopes his brother will get the help he needs and he plans to support his brother at his first court appearance on Tuesday.

Officials said the man who was shot was treated and released from the hospital, as was the neighbor who was stabbed in the neck. The woman who suffered a knife slash treated the injury herself.
