An existing building in Portland’s Slabtown neighborhood is being renovated into a new library. The Northwest Library is moving from a leased space at 2300 N.W. Thurman St. to a building at 2030 N.W. Pettygrove St. A ceremonial ground-breaking event took place on Wednesday.

Multnomah County Library purchased the one-story building in 2021 for $7.2 million, according to a press release. It has around 17,800 gross square feet, including approximately 11,300 that will be renovated to become the library and support spaces. The remaining space will be untouched (except to meet code and Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design requirements) for the organization’s future use.

Hennebery Eddy Architects led the design for the Northwest Library. The project team also includes structural engineer James G. Pierson Inc. ; civil engineer KPFF ; landscape architect Mayer/Reed , electrical engineer Landis Consulting ; mechanical and plumbing engineer Arris Consulting ; and general contractor Howard S. Wright , a Balfour Beatty company.

Some of the work will include seismic upgrades, installation of new mechanical, plumbing, electrical, and fire/life safety systems, and construction of new restrooms.

An accessible public terrace, landscaping and bike parking will be located on the site’s east side around the main entrance and book drop. A dedicated staff/deliveries entrance, and a garbage/recycling enclosure will be on the site’s west side. This entire area will be within a secure enclosure. All openings on the north elevation are to remain, except for one swing door that will be infilled.Existing glazed garage doors will be replaced with storefront windows, Multnomah County Library spokesperson Liz Sauer stated in an email.

New features, guided by input provided by staff and community members, will include a large play and learning space for children and families, flexible meeting spaces for community use, a dedicated teen area, updated technology and internet, and new art that represents the community in collaboration with the Regional Arts and Culture Council .

A LEED silver rating is being sought for the project, Sauer stated.

Some of the project’s design aspects aren’t final yet. Community members can vote for their favorite color palette at three places online , at the existing library on Thurman Street, or at Friendly House (1737 N.W. 26th Ave.) from June 17 through July 1.

The total project cost is approximately $20 million, including around $7.75 million for construction.

The new Northwest Library is scheduled to open in summer 2025.
