The new Holgate library branch in Southeast Portland will officially open on July 13, Multnomah County announced Monday.

The facility at 7905 S.E. Holgate Blvd. is the county’s first new permanent library to open in more than a decade. The two-story, 21,000-square-foot structure is more than three times the size of the library it’s replacing.

The $27 million project was designed by Bora Architecture & Interiors and built by general contractor Swinerton . Holgate is the first new library building constructed with money from the $387 million bond measure approved by voters in November 2020.

“One of the most important eastside libraries has finally gotten the makeover this community deserves,” Multnomah County Chairwoman Jessica Vega Pederson stated.

The project is on track to receive a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design gold rating from the U.S. Green Building Council . The project will be delivered on time and on budget, according to Pederson.

The building’s interior and exterior colors were determined by the community with nearly 3,000 votes cast. “Soothing green” shades inspired by nature won, the county stated.

Facility highlights include several community rooms equipped with audio-visual technology, modern self-checkout stations, book lockers, an enclosed space for teens and an outdoor plaza.

“When community members come through the doors of the new Holgate, we hope they feel that this is their library,” Annie Lewis, Multnomah County Library’s interim director, stated. “Their diverse vision helped guide the design of Holgate every step of the way.”

The Holgate branch will host activities July 13-15 to celebrate its official opening.
