A regional orchestra that has been performing for more than four decades has announced not just its latest concert series, but also a complete rebrand/name change.

The Portland Columbia Symphony is now the Orchestra Nova Northwest, a change that comes alongside its 2024-25 season. The name change is not just about aesthetic, but a hope by the board to not just play revered works of the classical canon, but also celebrate works of under-represented and newer composers.

The name change also is due to the orchestra’s reach far beyond just Portland, with concerts performed from Gresham to Beaverton.

“Likening the resurgence of the ensemble to the brightening of a star, or a nova, feels apt in this context,” the orchestra wrote in a statement.

The orchestra began as the Palatine Hills Symphony in 1982; became the Columbia Symphony in 1989; and the Portland Columbia Symphony in the early aughts.

“Although we are shedding the ‘skin’ of PCSO, we will remain the same vibrant orchestra that aims to deliver great music, close-up to our audience,” said ONN Board President Tom Chau. “This new name is part of our fresh approach to the future.”

While the name changes, the leadership remains the same, with Maestro Steven Byess’ contract extended through 2030.

“The mission of Orchestra Nova Northwest is to forge connections across the centuries of classical music to the present and into the future,” Byess said. “As I look forward to this exciting new chapter for the wonderful orchestra I’ve led for the past ten years, and as I take deep satisfaction in the tremendous talent that we cultivate and nurture within our ranks, I am full of anticipation for the musical journeys that lie ahead.”

The debut season of Orchestra Nova Northwest hopes to delight both aficionado and casual attendees alike. The four-concert series, with soloists and collaborators, includes three in East County:

“Essence American,” with piano soloist Artina McCain, 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 14, at Reynolds High School“Resonance Nova,” presented jointly with Resonance Ensemble, 7:30 p.m. Saturday, March 15, at Reynolds High School“Testimony,” with piano soloist Yaron Kohlberg, 7:30 p.m. Saturday, May 17, at Mt. Hood Community College
