Residents across the Portland metro area bracing for a heat wave slated to send temperatures into the triple digits, starting Thursday, July 4, through Sunday, July 7.

The National Weather Service is urging people throughout northwest and west Central Oregon — including the Portland area — and Southwest Washington to take precautions. Across Washington Counties, libraries are opening their doors to help people beat the heat, outside of the holiday.

Washington County hosts an online list of cooling centers and shelters available for residents across the region.

The county has not yet announced overnight cooling center openings, as of 12:30 p.m. Wednesday, July 3, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t places for people to cool off, even on Independence Day.
