I know home prices across the US are crazy in general, and a lot of the more beautiful vintage homes we still admire nowadays were custom builds, not tract housing. Still, it breaks my heart to see how many gorgeous, jaw-dropping mid-century modern homes go for over seven figures these days... it's just not fair.
But not all beautiful mid-century modern homes come with such a devastatingly steep asking price. For example, this gorgeous 1956 home in southeast Portland, Oregon comes in at less than $500k, and despite its (relatively) low price, it ain't lacking in the looks department!
Portland realtor Jeremy Johansen (aka @homeswithjeremy ) brings us on a video tour of this authentic mid-century modern home in Portland, Oregon , which is on the market for only $475,000. Obviously, $475k isn't pocket change, but with Zillow putting the current median home value in Portland at $547,575, it actually costs below the local average!
Now, the three bed to one bath ratio might have something to do with that low price, and Jeremy even anticipates skepticism on that front. However, there's still more than enough positives about this place to arguably make up for that pitfall.
Pure Mid-Century Style
As a lifelong goth, I adored the home's solid black exterior (though that definitely wouldn't be a good idea in a hotter climate), but the real magic started once Jeremy stepped inside. The home's open layout feels very welcoming, and its characteristic mid-century modern elements like the vaulted, exposed-beam ceilings and warm wooden paneling everywhere make you feel right at home. Of course, in typical MCM fashion, the home has huge floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking beautiful landscaping, but a lot of them also come equipped with oak privacy shutters to give the homeowner the best of both worlds.
The cork-floored living and dining area flowed into the open kitchen , which had a lot of fun and funky customizations. As someone who likes having a washer/dryer combo in the kitchen, I don't know what Jeremy was apologizing for! The kitchen opens up into the hall with the three simple but cozy bedrooms, each with sizable closets behind rolling doors. The hall culminated in the home's one bathroom: a rose-pink tiled extravaganza with charming white-shuttered windows and colorful fixtures. Even the toilet was pink!o
Turning to the outside, the yard was a huge selling point for me. A wrap-around yard with a cute garden path and multiple patio areas, surrounded by tons of trees and mature, well-established vegetation? As someone who loves my outdoor spaces, that really spoke to me.
Checking out This Home
As Jeremy noted, this southeast Portland home is listed under Marisa Swenson and Megan Kondrasky of Modern Homes Collective. Minutes away from the historic Montavilla neighborhood, it's in a very chic, convenient part of the city. Interested parties who want to check the home out for themselves can schedule a showing with Modern Homes Collective through the link above!
