DoveLewis Transforms Local Veterinary Care with Landmark Expansion

PORTLAND, ORE. – DoveLewis Veterinary Emergency & Specialty Hospital is doubling its footprint in Portland’s Slabtown neighborhood, an expansion poised to redefine local veterinary services. This milestone marks a significant leap forward in DoveLewis' work to provide unparalleled care for Pacific Northwest animals. When complete, DoveLewis will be one of the largest U.S. veterinary hospitals outside of a university setting.

In recent years, DoveLewis has added new specialty medical services that complement its revered emergency and critical care departments, but space constraints have put a natural limit on progress. Now, DoveLewis will have ample room to grow into a medical center that mirrors human healthcare models of immediate care, intensive care, advanced diagnostics, and specialty care teams working together. This model lowers stress for pets and families experiencing emergencies, increases available appointments, and coordinates patient history across teams.

“We’ve been working toward a vision to serve the community as a comprehensive medical center,” said Ron Morgan, DoveLewis President & CEO. “With more space, we’ll be able to help more animals and people get the care they need all in one place.” With eight treatment rooms, three surgical suites, and twelve exam rooms, DoveLewis will grow its specialty departments in the new building while creating more room for the in-demand urgent care, emergency care, and critical care services in the current hospital on NW Pettygrove Street.

This expansion will also allow DoveLewis to broaden its educational efforts as a teaching hospital for both pet owners and veterinary professionals with training spaces and a 100-person community room.

“We’re focused on advanced care resources that will improve the lives and lifespans of our pets,” said Morgan. “They’re family and they deserve the best, and that’s what we offer.”

DoveLewis' ambitious expansion was launched thanks to a visionary donation. To fully fund the project, the organization is raising $7 million in community donations for the unique needs of each medical service, including a 3 Tesla MRI. The organization plans to open the new facility in stages as final tenant improvement and equipment fundraising progresses. The first stage is scheduled for November 2024.

The project is designed by Mackenzie and is being built by Skanska.

DoveLewis invites individuals and organizations passionate about animals to join them in this groundbreaking endeavor. For more information on how to support DoveLewis' capital campaign, visit dovelewis.org .
