Summer is a time for local prep baseball and softball players to spread their wings, and a group of local softball standouts did just that in the Canada Cup which ended July 7, and was played in Surrey, British Columbia.

The Moundtime 16A softball team based out of Hillsboro and made up of players from Sunset, Jesuit, Glencoe, Banks, and Lebanon high schools, along with players from the state of Washington, finished in second place in the Showcase Gold 17U division, bringing home silver medals after losing a hard-fought championship final to Canada’s White Rock Renegades, 6-5.

“In every game in the bracket play we were the lower seed and had to overcome being the underdog in each game,” Moundtime head coach Anthony Rethwill said. “I never think we are going to win a game, but the girls play at a high level all the time and outperform expectations all the time.”

The Canada Cup International Softball Championship is operated by the Canadian Amateur Sport Society and is an invitational elite level fastpitch tournament featuring some of the best teams from across Canada and the Northwest.

On their way to the championship game, Moundtime went 3-2 in pool play, then defeated three pool play champions before falling to White Rock, a team that featured Canadian National U18 Team pitcher Rylee Ruppel.

Moundtime is a club team based out of Hillsboro and practices at Hillsboro Stadium, along with at Moundtime’s indoor facility near Liberty High School.

The bulk of Moundtime’s team has been together since 2020 and has championships and top-3 finishes in tournaments throughout the Western United States

This week, the team is competing at the 16U Triple Crown World Series in San Diego, and over two weeks spanning from July 19 through Aug. 4, will be competing at the PGF National Championships in Huntington Beach, California.

Tuesday Mevis of Glencoe High School led the team offensively at the Canadian event, batting .419 over her team’s 12 games, with eight players in all tallying more than 10 hits apiece.

On the mound, Moundtime was led by a bevy of peak performers including Sunset High School’s Keana Cooper; Jesuit’s Mason Rethwill; Glencoe’s Kalli Farrimond; and Skyview’s (WA) Malea Figueroa.

In the end, Rethwill said he couldn’t have been prouder of his team and how they performed against exceptional competition.

“Coaching this group is an absolute privilege, and the players are selfless and 100% committed to the team’s success,” Rethwill said. “We’ve had a lot of individual and team success over the years. The players work hard, have fun and play at a high level. I’m happy everyone gets to see the results of their hard work and I’m excited to see what the future holds for them.”
