PORTLAND, Ore. ( KOIN ) — Ahead of the Portland Pride Festival parade – and overall eruption of rainbow that will be emblazoned downtown this weekend – KOIN 6 resident movie buff Emma Jerome is paying homage to cult classic queer films which have become mainstays over the years, plus a few places you can check them out locally.

There is no queer cult classic like “D.E.B.S.” Embedded in the SAT is a secret test that determines aptitude for espionage. The film follows the relationship between spy-in-training Amy Bradshaw and supervillain Lucy Diamond. Diamond is an infamous super-criminal, known for her operations, thefts, an alleged attempt to sink Australia.

Starring Sara Foster, Jordana Brewster and Holland Taylor, D.E.B.S. was released in 45 theaters. Over 21 days, it grossed $97,446 and received a 42% approval rating at Rotten Tomatoes.

You can go see debs on the big screen this weekend as part of the Tomorrow Theater’s Pride film series . Tickets are $15 and it starts Friday at 7 p.m.

Next is the movie musical “Rent.” The Jonathan Larson classic follows eight friends struggling to survive and create a life in Lower Manhattan’s East Village, in the thriving days of the bohemian culture of Alphabet City, under the shadow of HIV/AIDS.

“Rent” is showing at Cinemagic on Hawthorne this weekend and Monday.

If you don’t want to head out this weekend, there are a few options to stream, including “Jennifer’s Body.”

The film follows a high school student, demonically possessed following a sacrifice, who kills her male classmates and devours their flesh in order to survive, with her childhood friend striving to end her killing spree.

Starring Megan Fox and Amanda Seyfried, you can stream “Jennifer’s Body” on Peacock.

Then there’s the cult classic to end all cult classics, “But I’m a Cheerleader.” The film centers on a high school cheerleader whose parents send her to a residential in-patient conversion therapy camp to “cure” her lesbianism. At camp, Megan realizes that she is indeed a lesbian and, despite the “therapy”, comes to embrace her sexuality.

Starring Natasha Lyonne, Clea Duvall and RuPaul, you can stream this movie on Plex, Tubi and the Roku channel.
