PORTLAND, Ore. ( KOIN ) — A person was sent to the hospital with “significant injuries” after a crash involving a MAX train and a car in East Portland Sunday afternoon.

According to Portland Fire and Rescue , an occupied car wound up upside down and damaged on the tracks near 108th and East Burnside Street. The person inside was successfully extricated, officials said.

The MAX train was also damaged and prevented “crews from removing the electrical connection from the overhead power wire.” First responders are working to deactivate the electricity from the train car.

Firefighters said an occupant inside the train was also having “difficulties walking” and that a plan was being formed to “aid in safely removing the individual.”

Officials said one patient was being “transported to hospital with significant injuries,” though it’s unclear if that was the person from the up-turned car or MAX train occupant.

TriMet also released a service alert at 3:06 p.m. saying there would be delays to the MAX Blue Line in Gresham due to “a collision between a train and an auto near 102nd Ave.” It’s unclear if this is the same crash.

KOIN 6 News has reached out to TriMet for more information.
