Old Farmer’s Almanac: August’s temperature roller coaster for Oregon

PORTLAND, Ore. ( KOIN ) — Summer heat will build around Portland as the month of August begins hot and dry.

The Old Farmer’s Almanac is predicting a warm and sunny start to the month of August in the Pacific Northwest. That comes as high pressure builds over the west, sending Portland area temperatures into the mid to upper 90s for the first day of the month.

Summer heat will keep temperatures high and above average around Oregon and Washington Thursday. Typically, August is the warmest month of the year. Average afternoon temperatures sit in the low to mid 80s with low 80s rounding out the month. August is also typically very dry. Portland only sees about an a half inch of rain for the month with just a few one hundredths of an inch more than July.

The Old Farmer’s Almanac could be leaning towards those average conditions.

• Aug 1-5 : Sunny and warm
• Aug 6-15 : Scattered thunderstorms; cool northern sections, warm to the south
• Aug 16-19 : Sunny and warm
• Aug 20-31 : Rainy periods with cooler temperatures to the north and warmer to the south

The month as a whole is painted as a degree cooler than average for the Portland area with the prospects for greater than average precipitation amounts by nearly 1.5″.

NOAA’s Climate Prediction for August around Oregon

Hot and sunny weather is currently in the forecast for much of the Pacific Northwest for the first week of August. That’s in line with The Old Farmer’s Almanac, but will the rest of the month stay in line?

The entirety of the month of August is expected to have an equal opportunity to see above, below, or average temperatures and precipitation outcomes. Portland is on the fringe of potentially warmer-than-average temperatures, but that is likely for the excessive heat forecasted for August 1, 2024.

Unfortunately, temperatures are expected to remain above average in eastern Oregon and Washington with very little rainfall. That will keep the wildfire threat elevated.
